Craft and care

What goes into every Hidara piece, and how to look after leather so it lasts.

How the pieces are made

Every piece is specified in detail before we order samples, and the specification is published on its product page. These are the standards we work to across the range:

  • Leather: cowhide leather in smooth, pebbled, textured, polished or embossed finishes, depending on the piece.
  • Linings: cotton twill in purses and bags, so they are light and easy to keep clean.
  • Stitching: lock-stitched seams with bonded thread, which does not unravel if one stitch breaks.
  • Edges: painted and sealed, so they stay smooth and do not fray.
  • Hardware: plated metal buckles, clasps, studs and zips, chosen to match each piece.

From sample to your door

  1. Agree a written specification for each piece with our supplier.
  2. Order samples in black first, then other colours.
  3. Use the samples every day for a few weeks to see how they wear.
  4. Photograph the stitching, edges and grain up close, in natural light.
  5. Confirm prices and delivery dates with everyone who sent a pre-order request.

How to look after leather

This general advice suits most smooth leather goods. Always follow any care card that comes with a piece, and test any product on a hidden area first.

Clean gently

Wipe off dust with a soft, dry cloth. For marks, use a cloth that is barely damp, then let the area dry. Avoid household cleaners, baby wipes, alcohol and solvents, as they can dry out or stain leather.

Condition now and then

When leather starts to look dry or dull, rub in a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth, then buff off the excess. A few times a year is usually plenty.

Avoid soaking

Keep leather out of heavy rain where you can. If it gets wet, blot it with a towel and let it dry naturally at room temperature. Do not use a radiator, hairdryer or direct sun, as fast drying can make leather stiff or cracked.

Store it well

Keep pieces somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight. Use a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic. Stuff bags and purses with paper to hold their shape, and hang belts or roll them loosely.

Good everyday habits

  • Do not overfill wallets and purses. Too many cards can stretch the leather for good.
  • Swap between belts and bags when you can, so each one has time to rest.
  • New, dark leather can sometimes mark light fabrics, especially when damp.
  • Leather changes with use. It may soften and darken over time. This is normal.

Belt size guide

The easiest way to choose is to measure a belt you already own, from where the leather folds at the buckle to the hole you use most. Then pick the size that includes that measurement.

Questions

Can I buy these pieces now?

You can send a free pre-order request from your bag. No payment is taken. We will email you to confirm the details and a delivery date before anything is made or charged.

What leather do you use?

Cowhide leather, in different finishes depending on the piece. The exact finish, lining and size are listed in the Specification section of each product page.

Does a new piece need conditioning straight away?

Usually not. Most new leather has been finished already. Condition it when it starts to look dry, and follow any care card that comes with it.

What if my leather gets a scratch?

Light surface scratches on smooth leather often soften with gentle rubbing from a clean fingertip or a soft cloth. Deeper marks are best left alone or taken to a leather repair specialist.

Will there be other colours?

Black comes first. Each product page shows the colours we plan to offer, and we will add more based on what people ask for.
